The History of our User Group

[logo]In August of 1982, a few users of IBM-PC computers talked the owners of Computerland-Capital Drive into allowing them to hold meetings at their store. They all, at one time or another, had a problem or two (or more) sifting through the maze to accomplish tasks on their computers. They hungered for the advice and fellowship of other PC users.

How We Promote the Use of Computers

  • Demonstrations of popular software, products, and hardware.
  • Provide instructions in the use of various software packages. (Including occasional classes in major programs).
  • A newsletter (The Blinkin Cursor) to keep current members up to date.
  • SIGs (Special Interest Groups) where interested members get together to discuss specific products or topics.
  • Good computer dialogue and information exchange with fellow owners and users.

What happens at a typical User Group meeting

The meeting starts with announcements and comments by the President of the Users Group. This is followed by comments and reports from other group officers (i.e. Secretary, Treasurer, Librarian, etc.). Then there are comments about upcoming presentations arranged by the Group's Vice-President.

When the business portion of the meeting is completed, attendees have the opportunity to make comments or ask questions. The comments, questions, and answers benefit many members, not just those posing the questions. It is surprising how often someone will have a ready answer or solution to even the most complex problem.

After a short break, there is usually a presentation. Very often this is given by representatives from major software or hardware companies. They quickly demonstrate the power and utility of their product. These tend to be very informative, and frequently the presenter offers members very attractive incentives to purchase their product. Often they will also offer software packages for a raffle open to members present at the meeting.

Membership is required to participate in any special offers or raffles, but our meetings are open to any prospective member interested in computing.
